My bass lessons in detail

My bass lessons are based on the students’ needs and I don’t use any ready-made standard concepts but will approach every student’s ability individually.
However, I will generally encourage everyone to work on the basic elements of music, such as technique, rhythm, grooves and harmony. But most of all I consider it very important to demonstrate how these concepts can be applied in a musical way.

Here's a selection of topics I address in my bass lessons:

Fundamentals of technique

Hand position left and right, body posture. The most important thing is to use a correct technique and relaxed posture right from the start in order to prevent physical problems and inefficient movements.

Incorporation of your favorite songs & bass lines

During my lessons I encourage students to mainly choose the songs themselves as it is very important to have a personal connection to the music they are about to learn.

Technique of practicing

Of course, everyone has to practice by themselves... But I can provide many tips on how to reach a goal more quickly when practicing, e.g. on topics such as: What should be practiced? How often should an exercise be repeated? How long should you practice? How can you learn a song more efficiently?

Playing techniques

Alternate Picking, Fingerstyle, Slapping, Left-Hand Muting, Palm Muting, String Skipping.

Sense of rhythm and time

Every bass player should develop a good sense of rhythm! I provide many timing exercises with metronome or loops.

Getting to know and play different styles

Such as Rock, Pop, Funk, Jazz (Walking Bass), Soul, Motown, Reggae, Latin, African, Hip-Hop.

Developing your own bass lines

By learning scales and arpeggios, you can start to build your own bass lines.

Ear training

The goal is for students to able to transcribe bass lines, melodies and chords by themselves.
I provide lots of tips and exercises for this.

Harmony and Theory

A solid knowledge of music theory will accelerate progress in every aspect of playing the bass.

Setting up bass and amplifier

How to use the tone control on a bass or amplifier. How to adjust string action and intonation. Flatwounds vs. Roundwounds - which strings for which bass? And of course I have many tips on how to get a good live sound.

Recording bass lessons

Every lesson can be recorded or videoed if desired, so it's easy to reproduce and learn the material at home. Of course each song can be sent as an MP3 file by E-mail or uploaded to a server.

Preparing for entrance exams

I can help you prepare for entrance exams to a music academy. Through many years of experience, I know what is important in an audition and which mistakes to avoid. Exam situations can be simulated and I can help with the selection of songs.

Soloing and Improvisation

Solos over chord progressions of pop, rock and jazz standards. Phrases, articulation, dynamics, chord tones, guide tone lines, vocabulary.

Notation and Reading

Read and understand bass clef notation and chord symbols and apply them to the instrument.

Advice for buying a bass

I am happy to offer advice for the first time purchase of an instrument. I have a large collection of various basses, which can of course be tried out in my lessons.
